Crafting images that are enigmatic, narrative-driven, and always leave one wanting to know more, it is no surprise that Marili Andre’s first love was cinema. “Cinema is not one thing. And I don't think my work is one thing,” says the Greek-born, London-based photographer. Andre will often derive inspiration from a single starting-point, like a compelling cast or a piece of clothing, and build the elements of her powerful fashion and beauty photography from there. “I love the suspense of it,” she says of her creative process. “That's something that really makes me fall in love again and again with photography.”
Adept at building worlds that draw the viewer in, Andre combines technical craft with wide-ranging references to craft her mise-en-scènes: compositions that equally draw the eye in print editorial as in a saturated digital feed. This skill at working within different modes has lately expanded to the sphere of AI, a technology Andre views as a tool offering boundless aesthetic potentials as well as technical ones. This openness of technique results in the photographer’s signature style: a vision both powerfully distinct, and always in motion.
Building on her long-standing collaborations with figures such as Lotta Volkova and Ursina Gysi, to date Andre has brought her lens to brands such as Miu Miu, Bottega Veneta, Versace, Diesel, Blumarine, Burberry, Marc Jacobs, Self Portrait, Byredo and Dior Beauty. Her editorial work has been published in magazines like Double, The Face, POP, Dazed, Re-Edition, Vogue France and AnOther.
