Tyler Mitchell

Photographer & Director

Based in New York and often inspired by pastoral and domestic scenes from his upbringing in suburban Atlanta, Georgia, Tyler Mitchell has established himself as a pre-eminent photographic voice of his generation. His work is recognizable for its intimate, authentic staging of his subjects whom he often shoots in rich, vibrant color palettes. He rethinks how the fashion image can be less censorious and more reflective of real life. What emerges is a fresh visual representation of his subjects, one that emphasizes empowerment, play, and celebrating the mundane.

Mitchell started as a filmmaker – which informs his eye for narrative – and has now expanded to fashion, portraiture, documentary, and art photography. His work is exhibited in galleries and institutions widely which deepens his image-making practice.

He has brought his lens to clients such as Gucci, Loewe, Moncler, JW Anderson, Simone Rocha and Wales Bonner, and magazines such as Vogue, Dazed, Self Service, i-D, Vanity Fair, Document Journal, WSJ Magazine and M Le Monde, to name a few.

Tyler was the recipient of the prestigious Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator at The Fashion Awards in 2024.

'I Can Make You Feel Good'

In April 2019 Mitchell had his first ever solo exhibition at Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam. The show, titled I Can Make You Feel Good, included a selection of commissioned and personal photographic works and debuted two installation video works, Chasing Pink, Found Red and Idyllic Space.

The exhibition traveled to The International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York in January 2020. The presentation at ICP was expanded to include new photographic works including a photo based installation titled Laundry Line which featured Mitchell’s images dye-sublimated onto a variety of quotidian fabrics.

Renowned art book publishers Prestel published an eponymous 206-page monograph in conjunction with the show at ICP with contributions from Hans Ulrich Obrist, Deborah Willis and other celebrated figures in the art world. The book is now in its second printing.

Zeit Magazin

Following the exhibition at FOAM, Zeit Magazin invited Mitchell to do a takeover of the 2019 edition of their annual photography special issue.

In addition to curating a 30+ page spread of work and a conversation with Zeit editor-in-chief Christoph Amend, Mitchell asked that the magazine run a feature on a photography pioneer and inspiration of Mitchell’s, Roy DeCarava.

Comme des Garçons Copper Fragrance

A multifaceted, sensorial campaign conceptualised, photographed and directed by Tyler Mitchell for Comme des Garçon’s ‘Copper’ fragrance. Using oxidised textures and abstract limbs, Mitchell creates a visual allegory for black celebration, a common theme running throughout his work.

“I wanted to visually link the idea of copper — a material typically perceived to be cheaper than gold — to the idea of black and brown skin and richness as a way of elevating the two.”
