With a graphical sensibility steeped in art historical knowledge, Julien Martinez Leclerc has established himself as a bold new voice with an intuition for a truly timeless image.
The Paris-based photographer’s clarity of vision for arranging his subjects before the camera lens began in his youth, surrounded by the works at his mother’s art gallery where he worked. His interest for staging and cinema is reflected in his sophisticated use of lighting and the characterization of his subjects. Though as much as this research sensibility anchors his point-of-view, the photographer’s portraits also resonate on the level of pure feeling: theatrical in their staging, and charged with emotion in how we interact with them as a viewer.
Bringing this sensibility to the worlds of both editorial and campaign work, Leclerc has collaborated with brands such as Berluti, Bottega Veneta, Chanel, Dior, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Miu Miu, and Supreme; his editorial work has appeared in magazines like i-D, Double, M Le Monde, System, Italian Vogue, and Self Service.
